Labette Health’s first baby of 2012 is Wyatt Hernandez, son of Ashly Hays and Justin Hernandez of Parsons. Wyatt was born at 1:19 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2.

Dr. V.S. Pai and the Labette Health Laboratory will once again offer a free prostate clinic for all males over the age of 50 who have not had a prostate screening in the past year. The clinic will be offered at Labette Health Friday, September 23, and Tuesday, October 4.

Labette Health will host an interactive “Bed Bug Boot Camp” on September 27 at 3pm. This free public workshop by Schendel Pest Services was scheduled in response to the severe increase in bed bug infestations in homes and businesses throughout the state of Kansas.

Labette Health's new Medication Assistance Program helps individuals and families who are without prescription drug coverage and whose family income falls below 200 percent of the federal poverty level obtain prescribed medications free or at reduced prices.

The Parsons Lions Club will sponsor a 5K run to raise awareness of diabetes. The run, which will begin at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, September 10, also will include a one-mile fun run/walk for adults and children. All race proceeds will benefit the Rector Diabetes Education and Resource Center at Labette Health. For more information contact Shellie Collins or call (620) 820-5230.

Philip L. Gorman, M.D., a Fort Scott native, has returned to Southeast Kansas to join Labette Health’s medical staff as an anesthesiologist. His first day at the hospital was Aug. 8.

Service totaling almost 200 years was recognized during Labette Health’s Medical Staff Appreciation Dinner at Parsons Golf Club Nov. 20. Honored for 30 years of service were William L. Dillon, M.D.; Sheela Kishore, M.D.; Chirund Lava, M.D.; and Terry Rothstein, M.D. E.L. Jordan, D.O., and Pat Webster, P.A.-C. were recognized for 25 and 15 years of service respectively. Those with 10 years of service were Jeffrey Hogge, D.P.M.; John Nicholas, M.D.; and Thomas Rose, M.D. Michael Bolt, M.D., was honored for five years of service to Labette Health and the community.

A newly released study of deaths from breast cancer has effectively ended the controversy over whether women should begin regular mammography screenings at age 40 or wait until age 50. The new study comes as Labette Health opens a new Women's Imaging Center.

The Labette Health Café is now open, and nobody is happier about that than Linda Johnson, Labette Health Food and Nutrition operations manager. Johnson is especially proud that the new Café is environmentally friendly.

The Kansas Board of Emergency Medical Services performed an inspection of Labette Health EMS to ensure compliance with Kansas administrative regulations and statutes. The review included operational and medical protocols, ambulances and equipment, equipment list, garaging, call schedule, attendant's certification cards, daily record of ambulance responses, and the service quality improvement program. Based on current state law, Labette Health EMS met all minimum requirements as set forth by the Board.
