DOUG
MERZ
H.I.S. COMPUTER TECHNICIAN / CARDIAC
REHAB
Service with
a smile. Doug Merz has both given and received that treatment
at Labette Health, where he's been employed for over 25 years.
He started his career at Labette Health in 1980 as a registered
nurse in the medical surgery unit, then moved up to nursing
supervisor in 1990. But not long ago, the tables turned on
Doug and he became a patient in January of 2005 when he suffered
a heart attack while at work.
Doug received critical first care
in the Labette Health emergency room, then was flown to Joplin
for further treatment. When he returned to Parsons, Doug enrolled
in the Labette Heatlh cardiac rehabilitation program. And now,
from first hand experience, he highly recommends that department.
"The staff was very friendly
and helpful, and very knowledgeable. They made my rehab exercises
fun."
And enjoying the program helped Doug
make a solid recovery and get back to the many activities he
loves including collecting United States stamps, building computers,
gardening, and camping.
"I mostly do flower gardening,
but I do have a small vegetable garden. My favorite part is just
getting out and playing in the dirt and watching things grow.
My camping activities revolve around camping with Boy Scout Troop
33 – I'm the scoutmaster."
Doug's prior belief in the faithful
service provided by Labette Health was strengthened through his
recent experience as a patient.
"Without this hospital, people
needing health care would have to travel to Joplin, Tulsa, Wichita
or Kansas City. Labette Health fulfills a very vital need for
the community with good doctors, nurses, and support staff. If
Labette Heatlh was to close or reduce services, people in the
area would be in trouble." |
